Model Weighting Workshop

The Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC) and the Center for the Advancement of Population Assessment Methodology (CAPAM) hosted a virtual technical workshop on Model Weighting on 28 Nov – 2 Dec (8am-11am San Diego time). The workshop was part of the IATTC research program to improve the risk analysis for tropical tunas in the Eastern Pacific Ocean (EPO). Diagnostics are used as part of the scheme to weight models representing alternative hypotheses about the population dynamics and the data used to fit the models. A prior workshop focused on defining and automating appropriate diagnostics for fishery stock assessments, setting the groundwork for the scoring used in the IATTC tropical tuna risk analysis. This workshop focused specifically on the scoring for model weighting.
 
The forum included keynote and research presentations, and focused discussions. Major topics included:
• Which models to consider and what measures (diagnostics) should be used to exclude models?
• What measures to use in weighting and how to determine the weight for each metric?
• How to combine weights.
• How to present and use results.
• Application of model weighting in the context of EPO tuna assessment and management
